Abstract

Empirical Madelung constants are calculated for the oxides and halides of the lanthanide and actinide series of elements. The variation of lattice energy with atomic number of the cation throughout these series is compared with the similar variation for the first transition series. It appears likely that the 5f shell, rather than the 6 d, is progressively filled in these actinide compounds. The lattice energy variations in the first transition series are shown to be closely paralleled by variations in terms which relate only to the metals.
