Abstract

This paper introduces a prototype that implements an Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) safety application aiming at enhancing the safety of Vulnerable Road Users, in the specific of crossing pedestrians. The solution leverages Internet of Things and Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) paradigms: a Road Side Unit exploits the information provided by a connected camera and connected traffic lights for identifying pedestrians crossing at red traffic light and it informs the incoming connected vehicles about the danger using V2X communication. The goal is to distribute the intelligence closer to the end-user enabling more timely and scalable reactions. This paper provides an assessment of the end-to-end latency of the implemented prototype. Measurements show that the achieved latency is below the threshold defined by the relevant standards on ITS safety applications.
