Abstract

Free-space optics (FSO) - or telecoms systems based on free space lasers (FSLs) - have attractions as an alternative to existing signal conduits such as fibre or wireless. They offer high data rates (about 1 Gb/s) and can be as much as a fifth the cost of underground fibre. The technology also has the potential to become a strong niche market in telecoms over the next five years: The Strategis Group estimates that global FSO equipment revenues could grow from US£100m to US£2bn by 2005. But, despite the attractions, FSO has drawbacks which may mean it remains a niche alternative.
