Transurethral resection using electrical diathermy energy has been the standard method of treatment for superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder for over 40 years. Using this technioue, bladder tumors which are detected visually can be treated successfully with relatively low patient morbidity. However, the natural history of superficial transitional cell bladder cancer necessitates multiple repeat surgical procedures over the lifetime of the patient in some 50 to 70% of the cases. Therefore, treatment methods which allow effective management of these lesions in a more practical and cost effective manner are needed.Transurethral resection using electrical diathermy energy has been the standard method of treatment for superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder for over 40 years.
