Abstract

Laser-induced fluorescence spectra of Ga2 in a supersonic jet are presented. The band systems observed are the same as those recently reported by Tan and Dagdigian (J. Phys. Chem. A 107 (2003) 2642–2649). However, in this work additional fine structure is observed which is attributed to spin-orbit coupling in the ground electronic state. The presence and magnitude of the spin-orbit splitting is in agreement wiht theoretical predictions and provides the first direct experimental evidence for a 3Πu ground state assignment.
