Abstract

Resonance fluorescence of CS 2, excited by the third harmonic (3547 Å) of a Nd:Yag laser, is reported. The laser principally pumps the R(62) line of 0,8.0 ← 0.1 1 0 and R(58, 59) of 0, 10,0 ← 0,2 2,0 transitions of the R̄ cs B 2—X̄ 1– g − system. Resonance fluorescence resulting from the first of these is the more extensive one, and transitions terminating on vibrational levels up to ca. 12441 cm −1 above the vibrationless ground state are observed and identified. The structured fluorescence is accompanied by a weak pressure-insensitive apparent continuum. The structured fluorescence has a lifetime of 2.8 ± 0.8 μs and a self-quenching cross section of 16 ± 5 Å 2.
