Abstract
The present paper offers a synchronic and diachronic study of the common and dialectal Spanish word-family: riza, ricia, ricial, rizal, ricio, derriza, arrizalar, etc. and specially the expression hacer riza (hacer ricia) - to devastate, wreak havoc. This lexical group, whose use is now limited to the region of eastern Andalusia, was in the past frequently used by writers of the Spanish Golden Age (Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Góngora, Quevedo, etc.). We determine the lexical area to which each word belongs and after the discussion a proposal for a new etymology of this group is made, and for the reduction of the two entries in the DRAE (riza y riza) into a single one.

En el Bajo Aragón lo encontramos en un texto del XVII (Ordinaciones de la Comunidad de Teruel, 1643) que recoge Joaquín Costa, con el valor ‘acotar o señalar una porción de terreno para pasto del ganado’ 160: En los lugares de la comunidad de Teruel, cualquier vezino podía riciar y recordiar [sic] un pedazo de su heredad en cada un año para sus corderos, junto de su paridera ó en otra parte conveniente, debiéndosela guardar los demás, so las penas forales, desde el primero día del mes de Septiembre hasta por todo Abril; y si alguno excediese en riciar más tierra que fuere justo, según el ganado que tuviere, se le podía limitar el regidor de la Sesma ó los Iurados del lugar
