Abstract

This paper is a commentary on Bierwisch's article (DRLAV, Revxie de Linguistique 33 (1985)) "On the nature of semantic form in natural language". The commentary provides background information concerning Bierwisch's conception of language and linguistics (§ 1), and examines, specifically, Bierwisch's views concerning the level of semantic form , the major aspects of discussion being : the conceptual part of 'meaning' (§ 2.1 and 2.2), the arguments for positing a semantic level, and their validity (§ 2.3). Although these are found to be inconclusive, a positive overall evaluation of Bierwisch's approach is given and defended in (§ 3) .
