Abstract
Purpose: Surface active phospholipids (SAPLs) including dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) play a vital role in the natural boundary lubricant of articular cartilage and are degraded during progression of osteoarthritis (OA). MM-II is a suspension of large multilamellar neutral liposomes composed of two phospholipids, dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and DPPC which is administered via intra-articular (IA) administration and is currently in a phase 2b clinical study. In a series of ex-vivo cartilage-on-cartilage friction and wear tests, MM-II liposomes were shown to lubricate cartilage and reduce hence friction and wear.
