Abstract

Thresholds for a 2°, 10 msec test flash (TF) were determined as a function of its onset asynchrony (SOA) with a 14°, 2000 msec adapting field (AF). The TF was located 7° in the peripheral retina and it contained light passing through a Wratten 74 filter (i.e. 535 nm). The AF was either green (Wratten 74) or red (Wratten 29; ≥ 605 nm). The luminance levels of the red AF's were selected to produce equivalent TF thresholds to green AF's of −2, −1 and 0 log mL at +995 SOA (i.e. the middle of the adapting interval). Equated red and green AF's produced similar on-response functions at −2 and −1 log mL. The cone activity in the red AF's had minimal effect upon rod threshold. For the 0 log mL condition, green AF's caused a slightly faster threshold rise and a larger on-response than did the equivalent red AF. At this level cones are detecting the TF against the green AF.
