Abstract

A simple and efficient powder metallurgy method to repair the large area hole defect of titanium alloys was addressed in this work. The titanium-based powder mixture was pressed in the defect area by cold isostatic pressing and then sintered at elevated temperature. Three powder systems Ti–Ni/Ti–Sn/Ti–Ni–Sn were chosen according to liquid phase sintering theory. Ti–7Ni–5Sn powder system led to better densification and interface bonding by sintering at 1200 °C. After repair, the strength reached more than 95 % that of the Ti–6Al–4V matrix.
