Abstract

A new large absolute photonic bandgap at high normalizedfrequencies can be obtained in a two-dimensional hexagonalstructure with alumina cylinders in air by reducing the symmetryof the structure. An instructive procedure is described forfinding the optimal configuration which gives the maximum absolutebandgap Δω = 0.091(2πc/a).
