Abstract
In 1984 Laos retained its aura of obscurity derived from the limitations on entry and travel within the country and the constrictions on its economic and political relations. The following account, however, draws upon conventional sources of information to dispel the mystery, that is, press and radio, foreign service personnel, international organizations, as well as a research visit by one author to Vientiane and the Plain of Jars. The Communist Party leaders of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (LPDR) are trying to set the stage for national economic development. The socialist model that is being introduced with special amounts of Vietnamese and Soviet assistance still generates rejection symptoms in the inchoate Lao body politic. Yet a vision and a plan have been identified and the means of implementation are inching into place. The Lao People's Revolutionary Party is doggedly dragging its ragged nation towards a modernized existence within an agrarian socialist state.
