Abstract
This multicontributor manual contains six sections, 112 chapters, and an appendix within its 996 pages. Lanken and colleagues begin with principles integral to intensive care unit (ICU) care, including the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of respiratory failure and shock states, and bedside procedural techniques. This is followed by sections describing optimal delivery of care universal to all ICU patients and to patients with specialized needs. The manual then focuses on problems encountered on admission to medical, cardiac, obstetric, general surgical, specialized surgical, trauma, and neuroscience critical care units. The final section, new to the second edition, includes Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education core competencies of professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, and system-based practice. Online material, via www.expertconsult.com, includes all sections of the manual and an annotated bibliography.
