Abstract
The French text analysis in the novel by Leo Tolstoï allows us to see in the author not only a great master of words, but also an observer-linguist who provides valuable information about the linguistic situation in Russia in the second half of the 19th century.Over the course of the century, the proportion of the French language in the communicative space of educated Russian society was undergoing changes. Russian-French bilingualism was being replaced by a mixture of speech codes, which psychologists regard as a signal of weakening the functional power of the language. The author of the article shows the main ways of functioning of the French text in the novel. French is used to transmit the speech of the characters, both French men and Russians, revealing their psychological profiles, as well as to avoid the direct, frankly emotional expression of thoughts and feelings inherent in the native language.
