Abstract

Commentary is provided on essays in a special issue of Metaphor and Symbol titled Cross-Cultural Differences in Conceptual Metaphor: Applied Linguistics Perspectives. The 10 components of metaphor envisioned in conceptual metaphor theory are explicated, & two issues raised by authors are highlighted. (1) The complexity of the relation between conceptual metaphors & metaphoric expressions is schematized cross-linguistically in terms of different word forms that have the same figurative meaning & same vs different literal meanings & express the same vs different conceptual metaphors. (2) The importance of the role of culture in metaphor usage is exemplified by Hungarian equivalents of 13 American English examples of the conceptual metaphor Love is a journey given by G. Lakoff & M. Johnson (1980) ; the translations were developed in collaboration with English-speaking Hungarian university students (N = 20) & are presented with extensive commentary.
