Abstract
Land reform in Tajikistan is one of the main tools for economic development and food security. Agricultural economy is under transition from a planned to a market system through collective farm reorganisation. Aim of the paper is the evaluation of farm performances in terms of size. The paper analyses Tajikistan general situation concerning land tenure security and the direct implications on newly established private farms. The study evaluates specific constraints affecting cotton farms and cotton value chain. Theoretical implication models are tested using a sample survey through multivariate analysis of farm data, to evaluate different economic effectiveness and the trade-off between cotton and cereals. Crop choice and farm dimension linkage is also analysed. Data collection was realized through field interviews with farmers and collective farm managers in two tajik districts, background interviews with international organisations dealing with land reform issues and central and local authorities.
