Abstract

VARIOUS authors1–3 have reported that under certain conditions the high-temperature jet issuing from the throat of a direct-current plasma torch can be given a laminar form and extended from its normal length of a few centimetres to about one metre. This communication describes some results of a series of experiments in which the development and structure of laminar jets in nitrogen have been studied with the aid of schlieren and spectroscopic techniques.
