Abstract

Descriptions based on males only are given of Lamanema chavezi gen. n., sp. n. and Nemtatodirus lamae sp. n. (Nematoda: Trichostrongylidae) recovered from the small intestine of the alpaca, Lama pacos, in Peru, South America. Both new species were also recovered from the vicufia, Vicugna vicugna, in the same locality. Among parasites sent to the Beltsville Parasitological Laboratory for identification and deposit in the U. S. National Museum Helminthological Collection by Dr. Carlos E. Chavez, Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru, are two undescribed nematodes collected from the alpaca, Lama pacos, and vicufia, Vicugna vicugna. One represents a new genus and species, and the other a new species of Nematodirus. The names proposed for the new genus and the new species of Nematodirus are based on the type host. The type-species name proposed in the new genus honors Dr. Chavez. The descriptions are based on 11 male Lamanema chavezi and eight male Nematodirus lamae. Additional males of each species were also identified. The specimens were probably fixed in formalin. Before examination they were placed in alcohol, and then cleared in lacto-phenol or pheno-alcohol solutions.
