Abstract

ABSTRACT Violet Hedger (1900-1992) is known for being the first College-trained woman in the United Kingdom to enter ordained Baptist home ministry. This article will give an outline and short assessment of her life and ministry, drawing particularly (though not exclusively) on reports in the newspapers to fill out the picture. It discusses her four pastorates, at Littleover (1926-1929), North Parade, Halifax (1934-1937), Chatham (1937-1944), and Chalk Farm (1952-1956), and concludes that her pioneering persistence ultimately made it possible for other women to follow her into ordained pastoral ministry in the Baptist denomination.
