Abstract

Pancreatitis is a well established complication of the drug didanosine. There have also been four reported cases in the literature of fulminant hepatic failure and persistent lactic acidosis in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients taking didanosine. We report the first case of a human immunodeficency virus (HIV) positive patient without AIDS who developed pancreatitis, profound lactic acidosis and eventually died from liver failure thought to be secondary to the drug didanosine.
