Abstract
Lacoea seriata is described from 2- and 3-dimensional compression fossils from the Lower Pennsylvanian (Westphalian A?-B?) strata of west-central Illinois. Stratigraphic data are given for the fossiliferous shale and siltstone which occur within basal Pennsylvanian fill in a depression within Mississippian Limestone. The six specimens studied include isolated fringed semicircular disks and a cone segment showing the arrangement of the sporophylls on the axis. Comparisons are made with Discinites, Noeggerathiostrobus, Saarodiscites, Heninia and Tongshania. Lacoea exhibits morphological characteristics of the noeggerathiales.
