Abstract

Abstract Fifteen day-old rice seedlings were planted In porcelain pots at the rate of 2 seedlings/pot at the IRRI laboratory in Manila. When the plants were 35 and 47 days old granular formulations of insecticides were soil incorporated at the rate of 1.0 and 0.5 kg ai/ha. Plants were placed in an insectary where the tempera-ture (27 t 1°C), relative humidity (60-80%) and photoperiod (12 b) were controlled. Thirty days after the second application of granules, when insecticides no longer caused insect mortality 2 gravid brown planthoppers (BPH) were released/potted plant and confined for 7 days. Four replicates were maintained/treatment. After 7 days the hoppers were removed and the nymphs hatching from the plants counted. Reproductive rate of the BPH was assessed through the number of nymphs hatched. Resurgence was related to the reproductive rate of the BPH.
