Abstract

Translating poetry : Federico Garcia Lorca’s Romancero Gitano as a case in point The translation of a poem is not faithful if it is a mere word for word translation. Transposing into the reader’s culture may amount to betrayal. The cultural, sociological, and psychogical roots of obscure poems, whose truth is hidden for various reasons (e. g., politics, modesty, etc.), should first be unveiled. The translator can only then try to be faithful to the unveiled meaning, and, possibly, to the metre of the target culture.
