Abstract

Dlttmar, Nobert - "Emerging semantics". This article summarises and evaluates recent semantic descriptions of learning a second language. It gives evidence to a functional and cross-linguistic approach on the basis of longitudinal data in the domain of locality. Special attention is paid to the role of protosemantics in the learning process specifying the pragmatic conditions of the acquisition of semantic primitives. The transition from non-analyzed formula (stereotypes) to the emergence of grammatical patterns is shown in details for the linguistic precursors of modality and the field of causative verbs. The dynamics of learning is explained by the hypothesis of continuity.
