Abstract
Starting from the premise that animals that appear in popular Mexican couplets have certain distinctive features compared to other Latin American traditional lyrics, in these lines a comparative approach is made between the lyrical tradition of the ancient Mexican poets and the of our current popular verses, in order to find out how pertinent it is to think that some symbolic representations of animals in pre-Hispanic thought could have penetrated into the Hispanic verses, granting, over the years, part of the personality that various animals display today in traditional Mexican couplets.
