Abstract

The international growth and expansion of Union Fenosa in Latin America has come about at the cost of significant social, labour and environmental impact. For this reason, in many of the countries where it has developed its business, the protests of the Latin American people against the Spanish multinational have become paramount. At this time, the company began to develop its Corporate Social Responsibility, which proved to be very beneficial for the company. On the one hand, social action and philanthropic projects through corporate marketing camouflaged the consequences of its activities; and on the other, it avoided social and union movements against it. This article analyses two specific cases to illustrate the reality of Union Fenosa's CSR: Nicaragua, where the company has used international commercial law over the law of the country, and Colombia; where it has been successful thanks to its Social Energy programme, which has countered the strong protests which have taken place against the company.
