Abstract

The income or tobacconist was the main source of financing of the Crown in the Canary Islands during the s. XVIII. From its direct administration in 1718 and until the end of the century it generated positive returns that substantially exceeded those obtained by other royal revenues. This paper addresses the main income and costs of the tobacconist and determines its average annual return depending on whether or not the annual income exceeded the figure of reales de vellón 1.5 million of whole value fleece.
