Abstract

Running has become in a short time a mass sport, generating a whole business around it and an important economic impact in those places that host this type of events. This paper will analyze the particular case of mountain running or better known as trail running. To do this, we will study the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impact of the organization of a half-marathon on a rural population of only 100 inhabitants such as Carricola, located in the south of the province of Valencia. From this, we will assess how an event with a minimum of public funding, can generate a positive impact in economic, tourism and socio-cultural terms in rural municipalities with difficulties for their development.
