Abstract

The prison of Crest in the Drôme department : politics and religion in the writings on the wall. The Tower of Crest, keep of a X century castle, became a prison in the XVII century. The graffiti studied here are particularly those of inmates gaoled for religious or political reasons. In the XVII and XVIII centuries, protestants were imprisoned in the tower. Some of them depicted scenes from the dragonnades during which soldiers went to dreadful extremes to force the renunciation of those professing the protestant faith. The political events of 1848 and above ail 1851 brought their harvest of those opposed to the new political rules. Liberty is exalted, dictatorship denounced, politicians repudiated and lampooned. In the XX century, the place was destined to become a memorial of the common man, with private individuals, soldiers, students and associations leaving their names on the walls. A debate is now taking place on the preservation and presentation to the public of this altogether original heritage.
