Abstract

This article presents a study of the work of Joaquin Marquez (Seville, 1934) through analysis of his biography, his poetics, and his poetry. First, two key factors in the poet’s life —generational dislocation and spatial displacement— are shown to be crucial in establishing his place in contemporary Spanish literature. Next, Marquez´s conception of poetry is explored, including the equivalency that he established between poetic invention and the creation of knowledge. Lastly, Marquez´s poetry is analyzed as an intimate biography of his life. Enduring characteristics of his poetry include vitalism, an elegiac tone and humor as well as engagement with life, love and art.
