Abstract

SUMMARY. — During the First World War, 140 000 Chinese workers served in France under British and French command. The YMCA (Young Men Christian Association), which was very active in China, provided interpreters and organized a system of animation and education of these workers, inside the many camps in France. The objective of YMCA was explicitly to promote religious education and conversion in China, once the workers returned home. We examine here the global politics of YMCA and its effects, and analyze the religious content of what was taught to the workers.
