Abstract

Abstract Many features of the landscape in Syrtis (Libya) are related to the geodynamic instability of the region. In this paper, landscape change is assessed at different time - and spatial scales: locally, harbours were submerged less than two thousand years ago; across the entire piedmont area of Syrtis, detrital sequences accumulated during the whole Quaternary; finally the entrenched valleys which breached the coastal range are to be interpreted within the much larger framework of the Eastern Mediterranean geotectonic unit.
