Abstract

Everyman apparently focuses on death, a well-known source of inspiration for sermons, medieval drama and art. Yet this perception of the main issue of the play is certainly frustrating as well as uninteresting. The strength of the text lies in the dialectical staging of two processes, dying and healing, which go beyond the mere issue of death. Dying―holy dying―and healing, set against the social and historical backcloth of medieval Europe with its changes, tragedies and outbreaks of plague, imply a progress leading to the spiritual transformation of Everyman, probably a member of the merchant class, also showing the audience that the spiritual part of the body, promised to decay, may be amended and healedchemin, cheminement, Everyman et saint Paul, guérison, symbolisme de l’eau, thérapie
