Abstract

The aim of the present article is to demonstrate how education served as a conduit through which Bishop Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira sought to realize his Church project for the state of Goiás. This project, primarily political in nature, revolved around the endeavor to secure a pivotal position for the Catholic Church in one of the most fundamental aspects of Goiás' "modernization projects," thereby rendering it an indispensable institution for the State during a critical period of institutional political constraints. To achieve this objective, the article is divided into two sections: the first section examines the education project and the modernizing discourse of Goiás in Dom Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira. In the second section, the paper delves into Dom Emanuel's tangible investments in the realm of education, arguing how these investments were intertwined with his political and religious agendas. Consequently, the paper presents arguments and conclusions elucidating the substantial weight and significance of the educational sector in Dom Emanuel's Church endeavors during his tenure in Goiás.
