Abstract
Abstract: In 1909, Benito Pérez Galdós published El caballero encantado , a work clearly reminiscent of Cervantes. The author proposes a journey through the various social spheres of Spain. Moreover, he revisits past eras and a contested history, foreshadowing the work of Américo Castro. Pérez Galdós breaks with realistic representation by allowing his characters to traverse fantastical dimensions, grasping a more complete vision of Spain. Far from nostalgic yearning, Galdós finds in the past the vital impulse to renew Spain in both its present and future, redefining the narrative of Spanish historical identity.
