Abstract
This paper deals with the definitiones grammaticales in Irish artes grammaticales between the viith and ixth centuries. We present firstly a typology of Insular grammars, paying special attention to the Irish ones, to establish in which artes these definitions are found. Secondly, we identify the nature and use of definitiones grammaticales in these artes. Thirdly, we try to offer an explanation of their origin. Finally, we examine the use of this kind of definitiones in the continental artes.
