Abstract
Objective : implantable veinous access device is a long term venous access system implanted entirely under the skin that has various indications. This study aim to describe indications, surgical procedures and the results of implantale veinous device in Burkina Faso. Patients and methods: A transversal, descriptive and retrospective study was conducted jointly at the Schiphra Hospital and the Wendtoin Clinic from 01st September 2018 to 31st August 2019. All patients who had undergone implantable port insertion were included. Sociodemographic data, indications, surgical procedures and outcomes were taken into account. Results: Twenty-three patients were treated during a year, with an average of 02 cases. The sex ratio was 0.15. The mean age of patients was 46.4±12.7 years (range: 23 to 75). The median age was 46 years. The indication was cytotoxic chemotherapy in all cases. The cancers concerned were breast cancer in 19 cases, gastric cancer in 03 cases and rectal cancer in one case. The surgical approach by cephalic denudation was used in 21 cases. Radioscopy or/and postoperative Chest X-ray for control was systematically used. Cutaneous necrosis was reported 06 months after port insertion, as well as catheter thrombosis. Conclusion: Implantable ports are feasible in Burkina Faso with little complication. The ease, comfort, safety that they provide during administration of chemotherapy should lead to their popularization. Keywords: Implantable port-cancerIndications, Surgical techniquesOuagadougou.
