Abstract

The Battle of Philippes (42 BC) in Cassius Dio’s Roman History : an outline of the historian’s work. The narrative of the battle of Philippes (42 BC) offered by Cassius Dio in his Roman History is particularly interesting. Putting an end to any attempted restoration of the Roman Republic after Caesar’s assassination, the battle is viewed as an essential episode by the historian, who devotes 15 chapters to it in the conclusion of Book 47 of his Roman History (chapters 38 to 49). Based on a double critical perspective, both external and internal, the analysis of the chapters shows that despite appearances to the contrary Dio proposes a very meticulous narrative linking Philippes to the succession of civil wars at the end of the Roman Republic while demonstrating thanks to the inclusion of unknown elements that this quite singular battle had decisive political consequences.
