Abstract

2014 We first briefly explain how the total energy of a metal can be written as a sum of pair interaction energies between ions. We then calculate this pair interaction for seven normal metals with the help of a pseudo-potential, the principal properties of which are briefly mentioned. Comparisons with experiment, including the relative stability of various metallic phases, and the phonon spectrum of alkaline metals, show that our results should be valid only for light metals.
