Abstract

- Infertility is a problem that concerns a couple on five and that is on the rise. Psychological intervention during diagnosis and treatment of infertility represents a key element of modern infertility management. Despite the emphasis on this topic by research and by the European commissions on infertility conseling, its difficult implementation in the Italian cultural background is quite evident, both at the level of the paucity of clinical research and at the level of clinical practice. There are, for once, still too few psychological support services affiliated with Italian fertility centers. In this review of the literature we discuss factors that may con- tribute to determine such difficult implementation. We also illustrate the different types of psychological interventions in a systematic fashion that distinguishes between"informative", "educational", "supportive" and "psychotherapeutic" interventions. This description is aimed at improving the knowledge of the vast range of application of these services in the comprehensive management of infertility, suggesting an improvement of the research in this field
