Abstract
The extensor carpi ulnaris tendon is the only extensor tendon of the wrist and produces axial wrist extension in synergy with the two extensors carpi radialis It is therefore much in demand in professional or sports use of the wrist. Repetitive stress of the tendon may induce tenosynovitis whereas traumatic lesions exposes to palmar dislocation of the tendon following rupture of its sheath. In rheumatic disease (mainly in rheumatoid arthritis), it is the most frequent site of inflammatory tenosynovitis at the back of the wrist. When neglected, tenosynovitis of the extensor carpi ulnaris is then a source of progressive destabilization and palmar dislocation of the tendon, which favors posterior instability of the ulnar head and carpal malalignment.
