Abstract

Abstract Middle Carboniferous epeirogenic phases represent phases of uplift of continental and orogenic areas, which were accompanied by development of continental areas, erosion, detrital sedimentation, and climatic changes. These processes were responsible for modifications in floras and faunas toward middle Namurian time, thus justifying the distinction between lower and upper Carboniferous, and for the sequence of events that occurred up to the Saalian phase, during which the nonmarine character and arid conditions reflected in Permian and Triassic formations were accentuated.
