Abstract
In the "Centres de Formation d'Apprentis" (apprentice training centres), as with all levels of education in France, the teaching of language is primarily concerned with the written language. The focus of this paper is to present the point of view of the protagonists involved in the process of French teaching : the role of official documents, text and exercise books, as well as the reactions of teachers and pupils to this process. The conclusions that we arrived at lead us to believe that the situation as it now exists is untenable. If it is acknowledged that the teaching of oral language is critical in improving the way pupils speak, it would then be necessary to change the whole program.
