Abstract

Knowledge Acquisition as a Modelling Process : Tools and Methods The field of knowledge acquisition has largely evolved over the last decade. First thought as transcription task, it is now considered as a modelling task. This new framework enables the design of a new generation of powerful tools and methods for knowledge acquisition. In the first part, we outline the difficulties encountered during knowledge acquisition and show how it has lead to the "modelling approach". We then describe some attempts to provide a theoretical ground to such approach. Lastly, we explain how knowledge acquisition tools and methodologies can be designed taking benefit of this approach In the second part, we propose a classification of existing tools based on the role they play during the knowledge acquisition process. In particular, two classes are described. The tools and methods dealing with the construction of the model itself and the tools and methods dealing with the instanciation of a conceptual model in a specific domain.
