Abstract

Cultural criticism has a long tradition and shows up in many variants. As a modern mode of reflection, it is typically characterised by features such as - the discrepancy between a normative ideal, often seen in the past,and the existing bad reality - a holistic construal of heterogenous phenomena of the present - a long range perspective on development which not only glorifies the past and complains of the present, but also has sees a positive potential in the future - a high degree of sensibility for emergent problems and issues. It is often carried by academic outsiders, tends to goes across disciplines, and in many cases has strong relations to practical action.
