Abstract
„The Culture of Language and the Language of Culture. Learning Polish as a foreign language at B2-C1 level. Course materials for Ukrainian students” „The Culture of Language and the Language of Culture” is one of a kind set of course materials written for teaching and learning Polish at B2-C1 level and meant for Ukrainian students. This publication aims to facilitate the acquisition of cultural competences so it embraces such topics as the culture of language, regional culture, culinary culture, socio-culture, and spiritual culture (literature, music and the cinema). The contents of the course materials are diverse in terms of language styles and the level of difficulty. Thus, the learner will come across colloquial and formal registers, journalistic-informative style, literary style, academic style and elements of regional language. This variety of styles and registers is reflected both in the leading texts and exercises as well as the narration in each unit. In this book students learning Polish as a foreign language will find the answers to many questions such as: • How to criticise someone without insulting them? • What is the difference between a proposal and an engagement? • Where is the line between a kind request and a rude reminder? • What are the characteristic features of the language of youth? • How to offer comfort to someone in a difficult situation? • „Ministra” (a lady minister) and „rektora” (a lady rector) – what are these strange words? • Is Polish a language with gender? • What are folk art cut-outs? • „Kartofle”, „pyry”, „bulwy”, „grule”, „barabole” or maybe simply “potatoes”? • What does meat pie, onion bread, sauerkraut soup, ginger cake, fuczki and proziak taste like? • What to watch if you have an evening off – “Chłopi” (“The Peasants”) or “Znachor” (“ForgottenLove”)? • Is “wolna amerykanka” slow? • Can “babka drożdżowa” (teacake) wear a skirt? One of the additional assets of the book is its table of contents specifying what language functions and communicative skills are practised in each unit. Each of the four parts of the book is followed by a glossary/mini-dictionary and an answer key.
