Abstract
Christian Gottlieb Kratzenstein was a leading physician, physicist, and natural scientist in the 18th century, who made important contributions to experimental physics and medicine. Among linguists, he is known as the inventor of a ‘speaking machine’ which was capable of imitating vowels resembling the vox humana register of baroque organs.
