Korean Studies in Latin America: Current Scenario and Future Development

Abstract

한국학의 전파와 인적교류를 통한 긍정적 국가이미지 확대의 노력은 지속적으로 이루어져 왔다. 해외의 한국학 연구를 지원하는 여러 프로그램들이 가동되고 있으며, 한국학 진흥 사업단, 한국국제교류재단, 세종학당재단 등이 그 중심적 행위주체로서 작동하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 지원 프로그램의 수혜에서 상대적으로 열세에 처해 있는 중남미 지역에서의 한국학 연구의 현황과 그 문제점들을 고찰하고 발전방안을 모색하고 있다. 연구의 구성은 먼저 중남미의 지역적 특성과 이 지역에서의 한국 이미지 및한류상황을 고찰하고, 이에 근거하여 한국학 연구의 현황과 발전가능성을 탐색한다. 연구의 현황분석은 한국어 교육기관의 분포 및 대학수준에서의 학과개설 현황, 한국학 연구 지원프로그램 수혜 현황 등을 바탕으로 이루어지고 있다. 마지막으로 기존 사업에 대한 검토 및 현지 인터뷰와 이메일 인터뷰를 통한 중남미 한국학 연구자들과의 의견교환 등을 바탕으로 중남미 한국학 연구의 문제점들을 지적하고, 결론으로서 이의 해결방 안과 발전방안을 제시하고 있다.The effort of improving the Korean national image by encouraging Korean Studies overseas and human exchanges has been propelled continuously. There exist various programs of supporting Korean Studies overseas. Korean Studies Promotion Service, the Korea Foundation, and King Sejong Institute Foundation are three main actors of those programs. Korean Studies in Latin America is relatively weak compared with the situation of other areas. This study aims to explore the status and problems of Korean Studies in Latin American countries, and suggest the possible development methods. The study starts with analyzing the geographical characteristics of Latin America focusing on the image of Korea and Korean Wave. Based on this, the study explores the status and possibility of development of Korean Studies in this area. The analysis focuses on the distribution of Korean language teaching institutes, establishment of departments at college level, and the number of recipients of Global Koreans Studies Program. Finally, the study points out the problems of Korean Studies in this area by having direct and e-mail interviews with scholars of Korean Studies. Along with this, the solutions and ways of development are suggested as well.
