Abstract

A significant part of the research regarding phenomena of violence among with disabilities involves women. In contrast, much less attention is paid to violence inflicted on men with disabilities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand if and how physical disability intersects with the structure of masculinity and experiences of violence among men with disabilities. The study used in-depth interviews conducted among men with physical disabilities. Data analysis was performed using the grounded theory methodology. Results: Study participants’ social expectations and aspirations regarding masculinity influenced their vulnerability to violence. At the same time, the men surveyed felt incapable of protecting themselves. In their relationships with their next of kin, they perceived themselves as having lost the ability to make decisions and exercise the traditional role of „head of the family. They also expressed their disappointment with decreased sexual performance in intimate relationships. The study shows that the disability of men had significant implications for their structure of masculinity and exposure to various forms of oppression, particularly emotional and, in some situations, physical violence.
